What is the barcode scanner?

This tool reads 1-D barcodes and QR codes from your camera or an image. Where your browser provides a native barcode detector, it can recognize UPC, EAN, Code 128, Code 39, ITF and Codabar in addition to QR.

How to scan

Start the camera or upload a photo of the barcode. Detected values appear with their format. On browsers without a built-in detector, the tool can still read QR codes and will tell you so.

Browser support

Native barcode detection is best on Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge) on Android and some desktops. Support for specific 1-D formats varies by device, which is why we surface the format of each result.

Safe results

As with the QR scanner, links are shown in full and never opened automatically. You copy or open results deliberately.

Camera and privacy

The camera is only used after you press start, decoding is local, and the stream stops completely when you finish. Nothing is uploaded.

Limitations

1-D barcodes need a sharp, well-lit, straight-on image. If your browser lacks a detector, only QR codes can be read here.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcodes can it read?

When your browser supports the Barcode Detection API: QR, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39, ITF and Codabar. Otherwise, QR codes only.

Why can it only read QR codes for me?

Your browser does not provide a native barcode detector. Try Chrome or Edge on Android for 1-D barcode support.

Is anything uploaded?

No. All detection happens on your device and the camera stops fully when you close the scanner.
