Check digitNo download needed
These tools draw a barcode image from a number you already have. They do not register or issue an official product number — GTINs come from GS1. See the disclaimer.

Retail, logistics and industrial symbologies, each with the validation rules of its own standard rather than a generic "invalid" message. Check digits are calculated or verified with the working shown, character sets are enforced, and GS1-128 Application Identifiers are checked field by field.

The 2-D symbologies — Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix, PDF417 and Aztec Code — use encoders derived from Barcode Writer in Pure PostScript, and every symbol they can produce is decoded back by an independent library before release to prove it carries exactly the data that went in. Only symbologies that pass that check are listed here.

Which barcode symbology?

The choice is made for you far more often than people expect: what the code is for usually leaves exactly one correct answer.

The right-hand column is the one that catches people out. Anything sold through retail needs a GTIN issued by GS1 — generating a correctly formatted image here does not register a number to you. Everything marked "No" is yours to number however you like. Start with barcode types explained if you are still unsure, and check any existing number with the validator.
